⚡ Federal Battery Rebate — Steps Down 1 January

Lock In Your Battery Rebate
Before It Steps Down

Under the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program, the STC factor for the first 14kWh of usable capacity drops from 6.8 to 5.7 on 1 January 2027. Get your battery sized and quoted now. The battery factor that applies depends on the actual battery installation date. All new panel systems (PV-only and solar + battery packages) are now scheduled for the new year. Battery-only retrofits still have limited November and December installation availability while remaining slots are filled. To qualify for the federal battery rebate, the property must have an existing solar PV system or eligible solar must be installed concurrently.

What actually changes on 1 January?

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program gives eligible battery installs an upfront discount through Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs). Under the current schedule, the factor reduces on 1 January 2027 and again on 1 July 2027, with further six-monthly step-downs through 2030.

Does this affect solar panels too?

This particular change is battery-specific. Solar panels have their own annual STC deeming-period step-down on 1 January. For All Green pricing, the STC rebate on 475W panels is $20 per panel lower for January 2027 installations. All jobs involving new panels (PV-only or solar + battery packages) are now scheduled for the new year. Those jobs will use the 2027 solar STC settings, and the battery rebate will be based on the actual battery installation date.

Battery Rebate Timing

Battery retrofit availability before 1 January

01 — ASSESS

Free assessment

We review your energy use and existing solar system to confirm eligibility and the right battery size. The federal battery rebate requires existing solar, or eligible solar installed concurrently.

02 — QUOTE

Clear current-rate estimate

Your quote shows the battery size, estimated STC support and the assumptions used so you can compare options properly.

03 — INSTALL

Confirm installation availability

Battery-only retrofit slots remain available in November and December while capacity lasts. Any job involving new solar panels is now scheduled for the new year. Our own qualified electricians complete the installation — no subcontractors.

Common Questions

Federal battery rebate — FAQ

Is it my contract date or install date that determines the factor?

The applicable factor is determined by the installation date, not the day you sign your contract. If your installation occurs from 1 January 2027, the lower 2027 factor applies.

How much less could I receive if I wait until January?

Using an illustrative STC value of $37–$40, a 10kWh battery is roughly $410–$440 lower and a 13.5kWh battery roughly $550–$600 lower. We’ll calculate the current estimate for your selected battery at quote.

Does this rebate change apply to solar panels too?

No — this change is to the battery STC factor. Solar PV has a separate annual deeming-period reduction under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme. Our solar-panel installation calendar is now booked into January, so new panel installations will be quoted using the 2027 solar STC settings.

What battery size gets the strongest factor?

The full factor applies to the first 14kWh of usable capacity. Capacity from 14–28kWh receives 60% of the applicable factor and 28–50kWh receives 15%. Battery sizing should still be based on your usage, solar generation and backup needs.

Can I combine this with other rebates or VPP credits?

VPP offers and finance options may be available depending on your battery, retailer and location. We’ll check the current options available for your address when we quote.
