What Are the Types of Solar Panels?
Are you looking to purchase solar panels but don’t know what type to get?
As more people start to use more environmentally-friendly energy, solar panels have become a popular purchase. Yet, the differences between the types of solar panels might leave you scratching your head.
If this is you, don’t worry! Below, we’re going to go into each type and their differences!
Monocrystalline Solar Panels
Monocrystalline solar panels are built out of silicon crystal. This crystal has been cut into thin wafers and then arranged in rows and columns.
Because of this, these panels can be very aesthetically pleasing. They are most easily recognized by their black, neatly-arranged cells.
They also perform at the highest efficiency among the types of solar panels. When measured, their efficiency levels often exceed 20%.
However, the efficiency comes with a price tag. While monocrystalline solar panels may be high-performing, they are often the most expensive.
Due to the cost of each panel and the efficiency with which it runs, monocrystalline panels are best for when you need to power small spaces.
Polycrystalline Solar Panels
Like monocrystalline panels, polycrystalline solar panels are made of silicon crystal. Yet, this is their only similarity. In fact, in polycrystalline panels, multiple crystals are used.
Often, these solar panels can be identified by their blue colour.
This kind of solar panel operates at a lower efficiency, around 15-17%. However, you may also buy it for a lower cost.
Its low-efficiency, low-cost ratio makes it perfect for powering medium-sized spaces.
Thin Film Solar Panels
These panels are made much thinner than either their monocrystalline or polycrystalline counterparts.
Although they perform at the lowest efficiency of the three, they are lightweight and portable. They’re also a good purchase if you wish to cover an especially large space, as they are the lowest-cost option.
Their thin style also makes them a perfect, unobtrusive feature no matter where you decide to install them. They can be up to 350 times thinner than the other panels discussed in this article.
While the cell portion is thinner than other types of solar panels, it may come in a frame that matches the thickness of the monocrystalline and polycrystalline panels.
Looking for Types of Solar Panels for Power Outages?
If you’re still wondering whether or not solar panels are the correct purchase for you, you should look into Tesla’s solar batteries.
These batteries detect power outages in your building and supply you with solar-based power. Their design includes a feature that will automatically turn the battery off once you don’t need it anymore. This saves you both money and spares energy waste.
